NHS Meningitis B Vaccination
Free NHS MenB (Meningitis B) vaccinations are available to eligible young people under a time-limited programme. You are eligible if you meet any of the following criteria:
• Born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008: This covers 17 and 18-year-olds registered with a GP in England.
• University Freshers: Under-25s (born on or after 21 July 2001) starting an undergraduate degree for the first time in autumn 2026.
• Residential Further Education: Under-25s (born on or after 21 July 2001) starting further education for the first time in autumn 2026 who will be living in student accommodation/halls.
This offer is also open to international students, gap-year students entering higher education for the first time and students from devolved nations studying in England. To receive the vaccine, you will need two doses given at least 28 days apart.

What is Meningitis B?
Meningitis B is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B (MenB). It can lead to meningitis, an infection of the protective lining around the brain and spinal cord, and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These conditions can develop very quickly and may become life-threatening within hours.
Although anyone can develop MenB disease, teenagers and young adults are at increased risk because they are more likely to carry and spread the bacteria through close contact such as kissing, coughing, sneezing and sharing drinks or utensils. The risk can be higher for students living in university halls or other shared accommodation.
Symptoms of Meningitis B
Early symptoms can be similar to flu and may include:
- Fever
- Severe headache
- Neck stiffness
- Sensitivity to light
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Vomiting
- Cold hands and feet
- A rash that does not fade when a glass is pressed against it (this may appear later or not at all)
If meningitis or septicaemia is suspected, seek urgent medical attention immediately by calling 999 or going to your nearest Accident & Emergency department. Early treatment is essential.
How the MenB Vaccine Helps
The MenB vaccine helps protect against the most common strains of meningococcal group B bacteria responsible for invasive meningococcal disease in the UK. While no vaccine provides 100% protection, vaccination significantly reduces the risk of developing this serious illness.
Under the current NHS MenB catch-up programme, eligible young people can receive the vaccine free of charge. The course consists of two doses, given at least 28 days apart.
